Get involved
The Student Union of LUT University is here for its members, and every member has the opportunity to take part in its activities in many different ways. This page gathers various ways to get involved, influence, and experience things together.The Student Union’s activities rely heavily on the contribution of volunteers.
Thanks to them, we are able to organize events for our members, develop the student community, and advocate for students’ interests in the best possible way. You can get involved according to your own interests and schedule. Participation can range from occasional volunteering to more active involvement, which may also open doors to positions of responsibility, employment opportunities, and valuable experience.

Board
The nine-member Board, elected by the Representative Council, exercises administrative and executive power delegated by the Council and represents the Student Union externally. The Board is elected annually, and any member of the Student Union can apply.
Representative Council
The easiest way to influence the Student Union’s activities and affairs is by voting in the Representative Council elections, held every two years in the autumn. The Representative Council holds the highest decision-making power in the Student Union. If you want to take your influence further, you can also run as a candidate. All members of the Student Union are eligible, and the Council allows you to have a concrete impact on decision-making.
Committees
The heart of LTKY’s volunteer activities lies in its committees. Each committee includes numerous roles where you can apply and develop your skills. Committee terms generally last one calendar year, and applications are opened annually in November–December.
Event Committee
The Event Committee organizes LTKY events in Lappeenranta, such as Jäärieha, Mocktails & Chill, Fresher Orienteering, and during Wappu the Wappu tasks, Lahtikursio, and Wappu Eve Party, under the guidance of the Board’s Event Representative. The committee operates as its own organization with its own budget and designated roles, but every member gets to take part in all events. The committee offers a strong opportunity to influence what the events will be like.
Well-being Committee
The Well-being Committee works with well-being, sports, and mental health-related topics. Its tasks include organizing well-being events (such as try-out sports activities, Mental Health
Mondays, and well-being weeks) as well as participating in the planning of well-being initiatives. Through the committee, you can directly influence what LTKY’s and the student community’s
well-being landscape looks like. The committee operates under the Board’s Social Policy Coordinator.
Wappu Committee
The Wappu Committee is responsible for communications and marketing of LTKY’s “The Longest Wappu in Finland.” This includes maintaining the @suomenpisinwappu Instagram account, updating the website, creating Wappu passes and posters, as well as photography and videography. The marketing team does not primarily organize events, but ensures smooth communication during Wappu. The committee operates under the Board’s Cultural Representative and works closely with LTKY communications. Exceptionally, the Wappu Committee term lasts only for the spring semester (January–May).
Lahti Committee
The purpose of the Lahti Committee is to organize events in Lahti. The biggest projects are Wappu and Fresher Weeks, along with smaller events and well-being activities. The Lahti Committee is a great opportunity to directly influence student culture in Lahti at its core.
Student Representatives
Student representatives in administration (Hallopeds) are students who represent other students in the decision-making bodies of LUT University. As a Halloped, you can influence what studying at LUT University is like.
This role provides an opportunity to become familiar with university decision-making and stakeholders, influence issues affecting students’ daily lives locally, and gain invaluable experience in societal engagement.

The term usually lasts two years, and applications are primarily opened every other year during the autumn semester. Positions may also become available throughout the year, so please follow our communication channels!
Projects and Jobs
The Student Union also hires both long-term staff and project-based employees for shorter-term roles. Project work is an excellent way to combine work with studies. Each year, LTKY employs a Housing Coordinator responsible for coordinating temporary accommodation in Lappeenranta, as well as a Project Coordinator to organize LTKY’s annual celebration.
